SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE 140

Viewer Feedback –
Hi Andy and Amy! I was wondering if you could share a fundraiser for a geocacher in Colorado that needs some help. David Mitchell has been very active in the geocaching community, and has represented geocaching in a very positive light at local fairs and non-geo events. He has also had a pretty rough year personally, culminating on December 23rd when he lost his house and everything in it (including his cat) in a fire.

If any of the GSReboot listeners are in a position to help, we would greatly appreciate it. Even if they can’t help financially, if they could share the link so it may reach more people who can help.

Thanks for your consideration – and cache on!

Proxy Information
What is a Proxy GeoCoin or Tag?
A replacement coin or representation to be out in the wild instead of the actual geocoin.
Some versions involve making cheaper wooden or plastic coins, then pasting a picture of the original coin on either side. Some geocachers have gone as far as to order wooden nickels premade with the design on them.
Some proxies are really cheaply done – imho.

Why the Need of a Proxy?

The overall lifespan of a geocoin or other travellers vary greatly.
Travellers when placed into the wild are now in the hands of humans. Things Happen. Do not become attached to travellers – say goodbye.
Newer geocachers sometime do not know the difference between swag and travellers. Note-they are the personal property of their owners.
Some geocachers do care enough and give them to their kids or pets because they feel they can.
Geocachers can leave the game completely or misplace travellers for extended periods of time – like years.
Things happen to the geocache the travellers are in at the time.
Disasters like, fires, floods, new construction…
Animals can devastate or remove a geocache and it’s contents.
Geocaches can just plain get muggled.
The sheer cost or rarity of a geocoin does not make it worth putting in the wild and is much safer in a personal collection.

The Proxy Controversy
Proxies have met with mixed opinions amongst geocachers. On one side, geocachers value them as a way to keep the concept of trackables alive and highlight the increasing rate of trackables going missing. On the other side, geocachers have felt that they aren’t the same and devalue the principle of trackables.
Keep in mind that under certain circumstances you can reuse your travel bug numbers. Discoverable Name Tags, T-Shirts, etc.
