SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE 189

What exactly is a MEME?
noun
an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.
a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users.
Examples:
One of the most popular for 2015-2016

Be Like Bill: a passive-aggressive meme that comments on people’s life choices.

GRUMPY CAT
More Cowbell
Honey Badger – Honey Badger Don’t Care
2001: All Your Base Are Belong To Us
‘All Your Base’ is an ‘Engrish’ humor meme… it comes from the flawed translation of Japanese into English subtitles. Instead of ‘all your bases belong to us’, this mistaken translation caught fire in 2001. The original video footage is from Zero Wing, a 1989 video game by Toaplan. Today, All Your Base is a joke phrase used in pop culture.

SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE 188

There has always been a Coke or Pepsi debate when it comes to some geocaching tools. One of the bigger ones is the debate between Multi Tools vs Swiss Army Knives and that got us thinking which one really is better than the other and what components we actually use.

So let’s bring out the two contenders for a look see.

In this corner we have the handy man’s must have – The Multi Tool
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-tool

Per Wiki: MultiTools
A multi-tool (or multitool) is any one of a range of portable, versatile hand tools that combines several individual functions in a single unit. The smallest are credit-card or key sized units designed for carrying in a wallet or on a keyring, but others are designed to be carried in a trouser pocket or belt-mounted pouch.

Historical
The idea of incorporating several tools in one small portable unit is very old, dating back at least as far as Middle Roman times.[1] Many of these were based around eating.

In 1984 Tim Leatherman sold his first “Pocket Survival Tool”,[2] larger and more robust than a pocket-knife based tool, and incorporating a set of needle-nosed pliers in a balisong-style mechanism. Too large for most pockets, it came with a belt pouch. Today, Leatherman Tool Group manufactures and markets a variety of multi-tool models.

“Leatherman” is now often treated as a genericized trademark[citation needed] for the similar multi-tools now available from makers such as Coleman, Gerber, Kershaw Knives, Schrade, SOG Knife, Victorinox, Craftsman – along with many unbranded types produced in low-cost production regions, and smaller mini and micro units are often small enough for pockets or even key rings.

Geocaching Uses:
Pilers – loose caps, stuck items, pick things up with
Bottle / Can opener
Tweezers
Knives
Saws

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=leatherman&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aleatherman

Per Wiki: Swiss Army Knife
——————————-
In this corner we have the Schweizer Offiziersmesser: German “Swiss officer’s knife”.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Army_knife

The Swiss Army knife generally has a sharp blade, as well as various tools, such as screwdrivers, a can opener, and many others. These attachments are stowed inside the handle of the knife through a pivot point mechanism. The handle is usually red, and features a Victorinox or Wenger “cross” logo or, for Swiss military issue knives, the coat of arms of Switzerland.
Originating in Ibach, Switzerland, the Swiss Army knife was first produced in 1891 after the company, Karl Elsener, which later became Victorinox, won the contract to produce theSwiss Army’s Modell 1890 knife from the previous German manufacturer. In 1893, the Swiss cutlery company Paul Boéchat & Cie, which later became Wenger, received its first contract from the Swiss military to produce model 1890 knives; the two companies split the contract for provision of the knives from 1908 until Victorinox acquired Wenger in 2005.
The design of the knife and its versatility have both led to worldwide recognition.[2]

Geocaching Uses:

Scissors
Toothpick
Cork Screw
Screw Driver
Pliers

Amazon.com
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_1_7?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=swiss+army+knife&sprefix=swiss+a%2Caps%2C135&crid=2D8YOEQG0FJ9N

So depending on your preferences and budget you are going find a multitool or Swiss Army Knife to fill your geocaching needs.

SHOW NOTES FOR EPISODE 187

A geocacher’s secrets to making New Year’s resolutions stick
by Paige Edmiston.

A geocacher’s secrets to making New Year’s resolutions stick

Lose weight and get fit.
How much money do we spend on mechanical clothes hangers or other fitness trends only to drop them after a few weeks or less? Get out geocaching and hit those trails to help with a better you.

Make new friends.
Go geocaching with fellow geocachers, new geocachers, etc.
Find them at geocaching events. Doesn’t have to be a big event. Sometimes smaller is better.

Spend more time with family.
Hang on to the time you can go geocaching with your family members.
Sometimes they grow out of it.
Geocaching with your significant other

Drink more water.
The number one provision of geocachers is water. Always be sure to have enough with you for not only yourself but others in your geocaching party and your pets.

Be less stressed.
Some of my favorites is:
Walking in the Woods, during the different seasons.
Greenways
Walkways
Places of tranquility

Travel.
There is nothing like geocaching in an area that you have never been.
Throw a dart and go for a day trip, weekend or more.
Utilize favorite points.
Go for areas known for excellent geocaching trails where you can possibly earn a geocoin.

Learn something new.
Puzzle or Mystery caches are a great way to learn some new technique you may never tried before. There are so many different ways of finding and opening geocaches that your geocaching pack may fill up rather quickly with gadgets and gizmos that you never thought you needed.

Step out of your comfort zone.
Many new geocachers believe that the only main type of geocaching adventures out there are the standard traditionals. Find the box, sign the log, put the box back, next.. But there are many other types like Earthcaches, Multi-caches, Whereigos and Lab Caches to name a few. Find out which ones interest you and go find them.
Go to places you have never been to!

Get married.
Geocaching can help. Seriously. Watch this video to learn how to make a geocaching proposal.

Break a personal record.
Goals are a perfect way to set resolutions. If you say to yourself that you will find more geocaches this year you may try harder to do so. Though if you say I will find 200 more geocaches this year you are more apt to succeed.

Spend less time on social media.
Yes we live in a time where practically everyone has a cell phone permanently attached to their arm like a Borg implant. We can’t move without poking our nose into the latest trend or hot hashtag. It is time to make a conscious effort to disconnect from the media hive and find some good old you time. What better way than to go out into the world and go geocaching.

Spend more time in nature.
Nothing like taking a mountain trail, walking in a swamp, exploring a dense woods or forest. There are so many places to find geocaches all around the world. Get outside and find some memories.

Give back.
One of the easiest ways to give back to the geocaching community is to become a part of it. Create cool geocaches, host geocaching events including CITO events to help keep our gameboard clean.

Eat healthier.
You don’t have to be a licensed nutritionist to realize that if you eat healthy and exercise that it will help your body overall. If you are willing to take the exercise aspect of your life why not go all the way and eat healthier too?

Start thinking more positively.
It seems to many that finding the negative in any game, sport or activity is the easy way to do things. Finding fault leads one to seeing only the most negative aspects. Why not try finding the positive and appreciating what you find? Personally I would rather witness the good in something rather than dwell within the bad.

Enjoy life to the fullest.
“Geocaching brings people together in pursuit of discovery, exploration, and adventure. ‘Nuff said.”
Really can’t beat that comment.
